Light therapy What is it ?

Light therapy belongs to the large family of phototherapies that employ light sources in order to treat various afflictions.
Here we are dealing with light therapy that subjects the eyes to light that contains no ultraviolet or infrared components.
We will refer to LUMINOTHERAPY (LIGHT THERAPY), PHOTOTHERAPY, LUXTHERAPY OR BRIGHT LIGHT THERAPY.
In keeping with standard dosage, the usual exposure times for a single session are as follows:

  • ½ hour for a 10 000 Lux lamp.

  • 1 hour for a 5 000 Lux lamp.

  • 2 hours for a 2 500 Lux lamp.

For each of these three exposure times, the recommended distance will vary according to the type of apparatus used, and is specified by the manufacturer.

Definition of light therapy

What is light therapy ?

  • A type of phototherapy in which the subject’s eyes are exposed to light free of IR and UV.
  • The light dosage is expressed in Lux (light unit per surface unit) over a given time

What is a Lux ?

The Lux is the unit of lighting per surface unit. A given surface receives one Lux when it is situated perpendicularly at a distance of 1 meter from a 1 candela light source.

Examples :

  • A moonlit night: 0.5 Lux
  • A well lit apartment : 200 to 400 Lux
  • A cloudy sky outdoors : 25.000 Lux
  • A sunny day outdoors: 50.000 to 100.000 Lux
